Great Honor for LMS Humboldt Alumni
Sanjit K. Mitra, Professor Emeritus in Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, California, and multiple Humboldt Visiting Scholar at the LMS, was honored with a large celebratory colloquium on the occasion of his 90th birthday at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in Hyderabad in April 2025. Among the personal congratulators was Prof. André Kaup, who recalled joint research work with Prof. Mitra at the LMS in Erlangen in a lecture entitled “On Historic Trends in Video Communications”.
At the ICASSP, PhD co-worker Marina Ritthaler also reported on the results of her master’s thesis on “Improved Motion Plane Adaptive 360-Degree Video Coding Using Affine Motion Models”, which she wrote at the LMS. Paul Wawerek-López, also a PhD co-worker at the LMS, presented the results of his major project “OSLO-IC: On-the-Sphere Learned Omnidirectional Image Compression with Attention Modules and Spatial Context” in a poster session as part of the elite study program Advanced Signal Processing and Communications Engineering (ASC). This work was carried out under the co-supervision of Prof. Pascal Frossard at the École Fédérale de Polytechnique de Lausanne (EPFL).
