Curriculum Vitae

André Kaup received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degrees in electrical engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany, in 1989 and 1995, respectively.

From 1989 to 1995 he was a research assistant with the Institute for Communication Engineering, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. In 1995, he joined the Networks and Multimedia Communications Department, Siemens Corporate Technology, Munich, Germany, as a project manager. In 1999, he was appointed the Head of the Mobile Applications and Services Group in the same department. Since 2001, he is a Full Professor and the Head of the Chair of Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.

From 1997 to 2001, he was the head of the German MPEG delegation at ISO/IEC and the chairman of the DIN subcommittee on video, audio, and multimedia. From 1999 to 2001 he served as Adjunct Professor with the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2005 to 2007 he was a vice speaker of the DFG Collaborative Research Center 603 “Modeling and Analysis of Complex Scenes and Sensor Data”. Since 2014 he is chairing the VDE/ITG technical committee on image communication and image processing. From 2015 to 2017 he served as head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and vice dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

André Kaup is a former member of the Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is a voting member of the Multimedia Communications Technical Committee of the IEEE Communications Society and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German VDE/ITG. He was the General Chair of the Picture Coding Symposium 2016. He is a member of the editorial board of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine and he served as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He was a guest editor for the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing.

André Kaup has received a number of awards for his research, teaching, and service. He was elected Siemens Inventor of the year 1998 and was the recipient of the 1999 ITG Award. He received over a dozen IEEE Best Paper Awards and his team won the Grand Video Compression Challenge at the 2013 Picture Coding Symposium. He received the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2012 Best Associate Editor Award. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the State of Bavaria honored him with Teaching Awards in 2015 and 2020, respectively. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

He is the author or co-author of more than 400 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and 60 technical reports to international standardization bodies. He has over 120 patents granted or pending. His research interests include image and video signal processing, coding of images and video, as well as multimedia communication.

Lecture (VORL)

  • Image and Video Compression

    Für das Verständnis notwendig sind grundlegende Kenntnisse über Signaldarstellungen und Transformationen aus der Lehrveranstaltung „Signale und Systeme II" sowie Basiswissen über Stochastik und Informationstheorie aus der Lehrveranstaltung „Nachrichtentechnische Systeme". Zusätzlich zur Vorlesung und Übung wird optional noch das Praktikum Image and Video Compression (PrIVC) angeboten.

    Vorlesung und Übung zu diesem Modul werden in Präsenz angeboten. Darüber hinaus existieren Aufzeichnungen von Vorlesung und Übung aus dem Jahr 2020 im Videoportal der FAU. Auf StudOn finden Sie einen Zeitplan für die Veranstaltungen, das vollständige Skript und die Übungsaufgaben mit Lösungen in digitaler Form sowie Musterklausuren zur Vorbereitung auf die schriftliche Prüfung. Gedruckte Versionen des Skriptes und der Übungsaufgaben werden in der ersten Vorlesungsstunde verteilt und sind anschließend auch im Sekretariat des Lehrstuhls erhältlich.

  • Signals and Systems II

    Für das Verständnis notwendig sind grundlegende Kenntnisse in höherer Mathematik, insbesondere über Folgen und Reihen, Integralrechnung und komplexe Zeiger. Hilfreich sind weiterhin elementare Kenntnisse über Wahrscheinlichkeiten und Stochastik. Die Lehrveranstaltung ist komplementär zum Modul "Signale und Systeme I" über kontinuierliche Signale und Systeme konzipiert und ist für Studierende im vierten Bachelorsemester im Anschluss an das Modul "Signale und Systeme I" vorgesehen.

    Vorlesung, Übung und Tutorium zum Modul werden in Präsenz angeboten. Darüber hinaus existieren Aufzeichnungen von Vorlesung und Übung aus dem Jahr 2021 im Videoportal der FAU.
